Chapter Seventeen: Eve

I want to burst in and tell Matt that I'm pregnant. It’s now or never. I signed that long-term contract, so I’m legally bound to work at Denver Fashion for the next three years. Maybe this is my chance to put all of our disagreements in the past and try to find common ground for the future. For Baby’s sake.

But all I can do is stand there with my mouth open. Bella is giving Matt a sexy lap dance and it looks like he’s loving it. I’m so embarrassed, and I feel like an outcast from the cozy little scene they have got going on behind the desk.

“This isn’t what you think, Evie!” Matt nearly tips Bella onto the floor as he tries to stand up. I can see the beginning bulge of an erection in his pants, and he does not attempt to hide it.

Quickly slamming the door shut, I make my apologies to Matt’s sweet-natured personal assistant. “S-sorry about that. I should not have just breezed in there.”

Matt’s assistant gives a tolerant sigh. “You’ll soon find out that when it comes to women, the boss’s door is always open.”

Moving back to my office as fast as I can, I mutter under my breath. “And that’s not the only thing. Matt Denver’s bloody pant zipper is always open too!”

I was right, of course, about being pregnant. Dr. Morecambe told me that it’s completely natural for women to spot a little bit during pregnancy. She said it was nothing for me to get alarmed about. I was honest with her.

“Doctor, I’m afraid that the spotting is the least of my problems. This is all a bit of a shock.”

Dr. Morecambe patted me on the shoulder. “You would be comforted to know how many new moms come in here saying that, Mommy Eve. Now, is it possible for us to get Daddy in here? I need to take both of your medical histories so that I know that Baby is healthy and safe as they grow inside you.”

I can just imagine Matt’s face if I asked him for a medical history. “Er… he’s a patient of Dr. Carstens. Can’t you get the medical records from him if I give you a name?”

My doctor shakes her head. “No can do, I’m afraid, Mommy Eve. They have to come from the Daddy direct. Would you like me to contact anyone on your behalf?” She gives me another squeeze on the shoulder. “You’re only twenty-three, Eve. It’s a big life-changer, having a baby. Can I call your mom or dad?”

Smiling mistily, I shake my head. “That’s one thing I am going to have to do on my own, but thank you, Doctor.”

Weighted down with pamphlets about preparing the body for birth and the best nutritional diet for pregnant mothers, I walk back slowly to Denver Fashion headquarters. Summoning up all my bravery, I walk straight into Matt’s office… only to see my baby’s daddy getting all up close and personal with his ex-girlfriend.
